2 Women Found In Submerged Car

ROQUE BLUFFS- The Maine Warden Service responded to a search for two women who had become lost near the Roque Bluffs State Park hiking trails. A nearby landowner was contacted by the Maine Warden Service. The landowner who is a firefighter and a member of Sunrise Search & Rescue volunteered to drive his ATV down to the shore line in an attempt to locate the women. Shortly before the Maine Warden Service arrived at the scene, the landowner called to advise he had found the two women and their dog. He gave each of the women rides to a residence on the shore where the Maine Warden Service picked them up and transported them back to their vehicle that was parked at the state park. The women started their vehicle and were last seen driving toward the road. A short time later, the Maine Warden Service received a call from dispatch that the women had called to say they had driven their vehicle into the water. The GPS coordinates from the phone placed them almost a mile from where they were last seen. The Maine Warden Service responded, but could not locate the car or the two women. Local fire departments quickly arrived on scene along with deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Machias Police Department, Maine Marine Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard. The vehicle was located underwater about 175 feet off the Pond Cove boat ramp. Both women were inside the vehicle. The incident is being investigated by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office as a fatal motor vehicle accident.
